Jonathan Havercroft is happy to announce the formation of the “OK Arctic Curling Club” that will bring together curling enthusiasts from across the state. The OACC is based out of Norman, where Havercroft is an assistant professor in the University of Oklahoma Political Science department. A 23-year veteran of curling in leagues ranging from recreational weekend clubs to the professional World Curling Tour, Havercroft sees this new venture as a place for recreational leagues, along with the opportunity to form a team to compete regionally.

Curling is a popular pastime in Canada and the northern areas of the United States. Developed in Scotland in the 16-th century, each team of four members slide 40-pound granite rocks down a sheet of ice towards a target in the ice. As the “stone” is sliding down the ice, team members sweep the ice in front of the stone with brooms, affecting the speed and trajectory of the stone. The stone closest to the target after all team members have “thrown,” wins that “end.” There are 10 ends in a game. Curling has become one of the more popular sports to follow in the Winter Olympics because of its unique, “Hey…I can do that” appeal.

Havercroft thinks there’s enough interest in the sport in Oklahoma to make the club work. A recent call for those interested in the sport on the social networking website Facebook, drew over 50 responses. Havercroft expects that number to go up as word spreads about the formation of the OACC. An “Open House” that would allow those new to the game to have a chance to try it out is in the works for this fall. The club hopes to have a league up and running sometime after the first of the year.

The OACC has launched this webpage to provide initial information for those interested in participating.
